Iowa Learning Farms will host a webinar at noon June 17 focusing on a new resource for farmers, the Whole Farm Conservation Best Practices Manual. The publication brings together recommendations from many experts on choosing and using various conservation practices to fit each field and farming situation.

The purpose of the manual is to help farmers and landowners develop the best practices for the successful adoption of cover crops, no-till or strip tillage, diverse crop rotations and edge-of-field practices. “This manual is designed to be a useful tool for farmers and crop advisers,” says Jacqueline Comito, program director for ILF.

It includes decision tools to guide operators, landowners or conservation professionals through the decision-making process for adopting and implementing various conservation practices.

Mark Licht, cropping systems specialist for Iowa State University Extension, will discuss how the manual can be used to guide adoption of conservation practices. Many kinds of practices are available, and putting them together in the right combination to fit the needs of each field and farm is important.

“It is my intention that participants in this webinar will not only gain an understanding of what is included in the manual, but also how to use the manual to increase and improve that adoption rate of conservation practices,” Licht says.

His research and Extension program are focused on corn and soybean management practices, particularly developing practices for the successful adoption of cover crops.

The full manual is available as a free download from the  or the . Ideas and feedback on the manual will be welcome during the webinar, so participants should consider downloading the manual in advance.
